Milk is produced due to a hormone called prolactin. During pregnancy, this hormone is present in higher quantities and is responsible for milk production. Normal levels of prolactin in female body are 5-20. Milk is produced when levels go above 25. Some times, tumors in pituitary gland can cause increase in the prolactin levels and milk is produced. Prolactin levels are also increased during sex. Suckling stimulus also cause increase in the prolactin levels.
