Removing a flash drive from a computer is pretty simple, but it does involve a procedure. If simply yanked out, it can cause loss of data to the drive as well as damage it to a considerable extent.
The simplest way to remove a flash drive from the computer safely is to first switch off the computer and then simply remove it. However, there is another way if one wants to keep the computer on, given below:
In the System Tray located on the bottom right corner of the screen, there should bean icon which says 'Safely Remove Hardware' when pointed on. Double click on this icon, select the desired message from the panel which appears, and click on the 'Stop' button. Then select 'USB Flash Drive USB' and click on 'OK'. A message should then appear notifying you that id is safe to remove your device.

Yes it is necessary that you must stop your flash drive before ejecting it or removing it from your computer because if your remove it without stopping then it will cause a problem and your data loss chances can be more.
The most common cause of data corruption is removal of the flash memory device while data is being written to it.
Well to remove safely your flash drive you must stop it before ejecting it from pc and you can stop your flash drive via clicking on the green arrow type icon on the system tray at the right most side with the volume icon, this icon usually is not shown if you have not any other external devise attached to your computer like external lan card or ,IrDA cable or blue tooth devise, if they are present at your pc then there must be that green icon on the system try otherwise if not then when you insert the flash drive after some seconds this icon will appear.
When you click on it then if you have any more external devices attached to your pc then they also be seen and you must know your flash drive name e.g e:/ or d:/ or any one else because it might be possible that you have inserted other flash drive also so you must remember that the drive you want to remove what is its drive name ,so you select your desired drive which you want to remove and then click on it and your flash drive will be stop and a bubble message is shown after 2 or 3 seconds that now after this bubble message you are sure that you can remove your flash drive safely.
