Aloe Vera has been used for centuries as a skin emollient i.e. it softens and can protect the skin. For this reason it is often used in hand creams and facial moisturisers. It can also be used in hair preparations, mainly shampoos and conditioners, although this is less common.
Its other main use is to assist in maintaining regular bowel movements. It helps the bowel to be lubricated and so the stools pass through more effectively. If to be used as a bowel support, then it should be drunk (liquid forms are available) although it is something of an acquired taste! Capsules are also available, but they are often regarded as not being quite so effective as the juice.
Recently it has become much more widespread and is used in a huge range of toiletries and due to its skin friendly reputation has even been added to some laundry softening agents.
