Is It Safe To Travel To Cancun In June Due To The Swine Flu Outbreak?

Answer Question

I don't think so. We just returned from Cancun via a Norwegian cruise (leaving Easter Sunday). We went to Carlos and Charley's and got in the Conga line and drank from the bottle. I am VERY upset that the Mexican government KNEW about this outbreak but failed to notify other countries (at least that is what we are told). I am not sick nor is my husband but after we returned home, we immediately connected with family and friends. If I had made them sick, I would never forgive myself. So should you travel to Cancun? Let's put it this way, don't wait for YOUR government to tell you what to do. Obviously, this could become a VERY serious threat, especially if it mutates which one official from the CDC is terrified of (his own words). It's not worth the risk to yourself or your family. Mexico is denying that there are ANY outbreaks in Cancun. Really? So explain why the students in New York who were in Cancun are sick. Trust your gut not your government. 50 million people died after the Swine Flu outbreak following WWI

I am leaving to Cancun on the 28th of April....I am a bit concerned about getting the flu I guess, but it is important to note; "pandemic " is only a word describing how it spreads not the seriousness of the Virus. 81 deaths is relatively low in the epicenter containing 20 million people in close proximity. No cases in Cancun, but it is true that 40 people in total linked to mexico ( 8 linked Cancun specifically) have returned  to N.A with mild symptoms. It seems in 98 percent of cases in the epicenter itself people recover with relative ease.

When i say 98 percent of cases, it is important to realize that less than 1 percent of the epicenter population has the flu, and of those, 98 percent recover! The math alone exposes an extremely low probability of infection  and even much lower probability of death if infected.  However it is fair to say around 1 percent of travelers in the last month have gotten  a flu....again all recovered.

So I guess the risk is in Cancun is remote, you might get it, but not likely as people have been traveling there in groves for months and only recently have any cases been reported, all mild and all the result of extreme alertness of health officials searching for the virus.

Secondly if you do catch it...it has a short incubation time, meaning you will know within a week...in my case if i got it the second i got of f the plain i would be back in Canada before any real symptoms where apparent, meaning that you would expect that thousands in Canada have been hit by this flu upon contact with travelers returning from Mexico.....this is either not the case, or the symptoms are so mild they are going unreported. The fact thus far state
-of all travelers from Mexico in the last month 40 of an estimated 40 thousand  tourists have tested positive for the strain,
-in all case the flu has been relatively mild - less lethal than pre -existing flu strains.
-Young people are particularly at risk, ???  First we need to know if young people are more likely infected or represent a disproportionate amount of the population. Or if they engage in activities that increase likelihood of contraction, heavy drinking, close social contact. It is likely these variables contribute to the spread of the virus and young people are engaging in these activities much more than the very young or very elderly  when visiting Mexico.

It is also likely that the epicenter local population are more sensitive to the mutated  strain strictly do to the fact that the virus thrived there in the first place.

Like HIV certain populations are at higher risk for biological reasons not social....HIV believed to  have originated in Africa, First  cases seen in black men and women, to date this population is still more likely to contract the disease weather in the US or Africa. I stress this is do to genetic factors not just social. The original population infected is  in Mexico where  mutation occurred.  It only makes sense there is something about that particular population that makes them ideal hosts. So far all deaths are isolated to the epicenter and local populations....this is exactly what we would expect to see.

According to the W.H.O 4000 people die from the flu in Canada every year so the case for this new strain as being more deadly than any other is just not realistic.

Enjoy your trip, If you hold back do to these odds I would probably refrain from driving your car to the airport and opt for an armored Brinks truck. Not to be facetious, but the probability math speaks for its self here.

The number 1,600 of 20 million have contracted the virus. That less than 1 in 100,000 people in the EPICENTER are infected.
In a city the size of Vancouver would see30 people with the flu and 2 deaths in a month, the fatality and infection rates of current flew strains are already much much higher.

Of tourists, who are likely to engage in more close contact and heavy drinking promoting irresponsible behavior, 1 in every 10, 000 have gotten a mild flue.

See what it is like nearer the time, and if it is still bad, don't bother- your health is more important

We plan to go to Moon Palace on 6/5. Does anyone know what it will be like at that time?
Has anyone been to Moon Palace recently,is it thriving with tourists or is it suffering from this?
A place this big will have problems with freshness of food if they do not have a high % of occupancy...

Probably. But then again many don't seek medical checkups. So I would say head to Brazil this year.
