If I understand you correctly, you have lived in this man's house for "free" for two and a half years?
So now, after all this time living rent free. You apparently didn't save any of the money you were not spending on rent. Did you think you would be allowed to live there indefinitely for free? You knew that at some point, someone would want to be paid. You are lucky he isn't suing you for back rent. Which he is legally entitled to do.
Having said that, you should contact him and plead your case. He may accept but he probably won't. You should make arrangements to move as soon as possible, since you do not have the money to remain.
