Could You Tell Me The Usage Of The World Had?

Could you tell me the usage of the world had

The word "had" is rather confusing because it is both a past participle and a past tense of the verb "to have", which is itself used in the creation of past tenses.

So, for example, if you want to say that John has been deceived, you might phrase it "John has been had.", which is the past participle. You might also say, "John had a Porsche", which is the past tense, or "John has had measles", which is the perfect tense which indicates an action or state completed in the past.  You might also say "John had had measles before he was offered the vaccination for it.", which is the pluperfect tense, indicating an action which happened sometime before another action which also took place in the past.

To show how confusing this could get, one of my English teachers repeated this sentence to my class:-

"John had had "had".   Mary had had "had had".  "Had had" had had the teacher's approval."  Try saying that out loud and you will soon realise how impossible it is to decipher without seeing it in writing and with correct punctuation!
