The Ujong Kulon National Park is in Java, on the western tip of the country. It is a tropical rainforest with the wet season from December to March. The average temperature over a year is 26 degrees Celsius. The park covers a total area of only 761 square kilometres and is up to 576 metres above sea level.
Ujong Kulon is one of the finest rainforest regions in south east Asia and protects Javan rhinos, leopards and gibbons.
The park includes land on the peninsula of the mainland and also the islands known as Krakatau. These are the remains of a huge volcanic eruption that occurred in the area in 1883. It was the largest natural explosion ever recorded and sent a tidal wave over 40 metres high that swept away coastal villages and vegetation. The explosion was heard 300 miles away in Australia. Now, the islands have a wonderful and rugged coastline that has many coral reefs teeming with life.
