    Wakefield is a renowned city as well as a metropolitan borough. It is located in the southeastern portion of the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire. It is a historical county of Yorkshire as well as England. Wakefield was originally a part of a Royal Manor. The territory became a baronial holding after the time of 1086. Wakefield was the site of the Wars of the Roses. In that war the Duke of York, Richard, was arrested and beheaded by the Lancastrians.

    Wakefield Plays which was one of the collections of English Miracle Plays were performed there in the fifteenth century. Parliamentarian general Baron Fairfax attacked the town and captured the territory in the year of 1643, during the English Civil Wars.

    Since the time of the 16th century the place was known as a textile center. Nowadays the place is known for its wool and synthetic knitting yarns. According to the report of the year 2001, the population was estimated at around 315,173.
