Why Is Liverpool Nicknames The Capital Of Wales?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is because many Welsh people moved to Liverpool in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to look for or take up work.
The Welsh, less so than the Irish or Scots tended to live in Welsh communities in Liverpool and many of them were Welsh speakers.
They were instrumental in setting up Welsh institutions and churches and keeping Welsh traditions alive.
The Welsh Eisteddfod was held in Liverpool and there are moves to try and re-establish this tradition again.
Many Welsh people moved into Liverpool, especially from North Wales which is geographically close and railways made an impact on the ability of more people to re-locate.
Although the percentage of Welsh people or second generation Welsh people in Liverpool was less than the Irish, they still made an impact on Liverpool life and culture and Welsh societies and language flourish there today.

Hi there we are a community charity based in Liverpool City Centre. We hold exhibitions for local artists and we currently have wonderful paintings on display of Wales. Does anyone know of a local welsh organisation we could contact to invite them to our centre to see the paintings and meet the artist herself, who has very strong childhood links to Wales.
Please contact Pauline or Colette at LCAD on 707 1404. Thankyou
