I researched a number of sites and found you are not alone in this problem. I have jotted down some of the possible problems I found. No definitive answers were given.
Suggestions: check your gas line for blockage, which may be causing gas to back into or be sucked into your crankcase. Look for cracked bolts and loose connections. The Crankcase needs to be cleaned, gas removed. Begin at crankcase and work backward to the gas line to find problem. Gas vapors being sucked into the crankcase may be the problem.
Here is a great website; you can email back and forth.

www.abacus-es.net/motorscooter.engine.html includes a couple of repair manuals; loads of information about caring for your scooter.

The honda Elite has a vacuum operated fuel valve. It's supposed to cut of the supply of fuel when the engine is not operating. If the valve is not working, and your carburetor float valve also does not seal perfectly, then fuel can run through the carburetor into the intake manifold, causing gas in the crankcase.
Take off the fuel line at the carburetor when the scooter is not running. You should not get any fuel coming out of the line. There should be 2 tubes going into the fuel tank valve. The upper one is the fuel line, and the lower one is a vacuum tube going into the side of the intake manifold. If you apply suction (using a plastic bottle or syringe attached to the tube) to the vacuum line the gas should start to flow. If this test does not work properly, chances are you need a new valve.
