Is An MRI Necessary For A Knee Injury When Surgery Is Imminent?
No MRI was given for my knee injury and surgery was prescribed without complete investigation to the extent of the damage.

I wouldn't be too concerned about an MRI, as long as other X-rays were taken and showed visible signs of damage. MRI's are pretty expensive and your injury obviously showed extensive signs of damage on the X-ray. Enough damage to go in and do surgery without the expensive cost of an MRI, and a lot of times MRI's don't show everything, its when the Orthopedist goes in he usually sees more damage then what he originally thought. I have had several injuries where MRI's didn't show all the damage. The only time they show extensive damage is when they run the dye with the MRI. Very costly, unless you have excellent medical coverage. Good-Luck

Yes, Mri's are costly, however, it would depend on what kind of surgery is recommended. If it is only orthoscopic (?) I would be comfortable foregoing MRI. It it was to be a fully invasive surgery, a second look might be worth it. Depends on damage being repaired.

MRIs are a great tool for spotting problems that usually do not show up on an exray. Problems such as anurisms, and the like. I would say that if you know that you have to have the surgery already, once the surgeon gets in there, he will be able to see more than an MRI ever could.
