The flag of New York was first made in 1778 and adopted in 1901. It represents the Coat of Arms of the state of New York centered on a dark blue field. The centre of the flag depicts a cloudless sky with the sun rising behind three mountains. These mountains are the highlands of the Hudson River. The Hudson River sloop and a ship containing three masts and a square rig are depicted navigating towards each other. This represents commerce. The banks of the river depict a grassy shore with shrubs. Below the shield is a white ribbon with the word Excelsior (Ever Upward), which is New York's state motto. A Bald Eagle is also depicted facing to the right on top of the shield, with its wings spread apart, perched on top of a globe showing the northern Atlantic Ocean. On the one hand is a blindfolded Justice with her hair decorated in pearls, carrying a sword in one hand and a scale in the other, representing the fairness of justice. Opposite Justice is Liberty, holding a pole topped with the Phrygian cap. A crown placed at Liberty's left foot signifies the powerlessness of the British Empire in America. While Liberty is shown dressed in gold with a blue belt having red edges, Justice is clad in blue and wears red sandals.
