An apartment refers to a dwelling that is self-contained with a larger building, often called a 'block', composed of many more apartments, or sometimes office and retails spaces. In the United Kingdom the words 'flat' and 'apartment' are largely identical and interchangeable.

Apartment blocks will usually have a common entrance or lobby, with staircases and / or lifts to reach the upper floors. They may also have shared laundry rooms and in upmarket blocks, sport and leisure facilities such as gyms and swimming pools These common facilities, and the upkeep of the shared building, are covered by annual service charges paid by each apartment owner.

Apartments can be large or small and there will often be a mixture contained within one block. Apartments with everything in one room are called 'studio' apartments, and apartments that cover more than one floor are 'maisonettes'. Large, luxurious apartments on the top floor are called 'penthouses'.
