The state of Colorado situated in the west central part of the United States is ranked 22nd with respect to population. The population of the state according to the 2000 census is 4,301,261 with the density being 41.5 persons per sq mile (16 per sq km). The capital of Colorado, Denver comprises over half of the total population with 2.5 million people living in the city. The current population of the state is estimated to be about 4,665,177.
The population of the state has been increasing rapidly in recent times mainly due to large scale migration of people within the country as well as from abroad to the state. The state has a high percentage of foreign born persons constituting about 9.7% of the population; the number of persons of Hispanic origin is also large as compared to other states. People of German ancestry constitute the largest group in the state followed by people of Irish and British ancestry.
