Articles of Confederation were the early US constitution which was presented by the Continental Congress. Brought into first in the year 1781, it lasted for seven years but was replaced by the US constitution in the year 1787. The high points of the Articles of Confederation was the 'union' of the sovereign states and the power it gave to the congress to regulate wars, foreign affairs, debt and the postal service. By virtue of the Articles, the Congress was able to establish the Northwest Ordinances. However the Congress was not able to enforce its plea to the states for either money or men for the military and by 1786, the Articles of Confederation were proving to be largely ineffective, and so had to be replaced by the US constitution.
