The Lord of the Rings was written between 1937 and 1949. The past of the story is exposed as the book progresses. The story starts off thousands of years before the action in the book, with the emergence of eponymous Lord of the Rings, the Dark lord called Dark Lord Sauron, who is a malicious incarnated immortal spiritual being who has great supernatural powers. The creature later becomes the feared monarchy of Mordor.

By the end of the First Age-Middle Earth, Sauron manages to live on even after the shattering defeat and exile of Morgoth, who is his master and the actual figure of evil. Throughout the Second Age, Sauron tries to gain power over Middle-earth.

The story and the book have received diverse reviews since its origin, which range from good to bad and terrible to excellent.
