Patented in 1937 by a Hungarian named Laszlo Jozsef Biro, who lived in Argentina, the ballpoint pen had its ideas initially designed way before in the late 1890's. Biro's pen gained a great magnitude of popularity in the following two years after getting it patented.
It was the United States who welcomed this innovation with open arms while meeting the need of the Quarter master General of the army, who needed a writing instrument that did not leak too much and would contain enough ink to last a long time.
As far as the technical makeup of the writing instrument goes, a ball is housed in a socket at the tip, which transfers ink from a built-in reservoir to the thin surface of the writing paper. The inks in the ballpoint pen have dyes that are soluble in oil or spirit. The first dye dries because it is absorbed into the paper and the second one dries because it evaporates.
