What Is Prozac?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Prozac pertains to the first group of antidepressants called 'selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors' or SSRIs. The generic name of Prozac is fluoxetine hydrochloride. Though it was introduced in 1986 as a cure for clinical depression, Prozac has found acceptance in treating several psychiatric disorders, which include bulimia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Prozac which is to be taken in a tablet format, gives a person a therapeutic effect by hindering with the absorption of the neurotransmitter 'serotonin' within the brain. Since Prozac specifically targets 'serotonin' without touching any other neurotransmitter, there are comparatively less side effects compared to its precedent psychiatric drugs.

Prozac is well-distinguished as a 'personality drug.' There have been reports of people whose personalities have improved thanks to a feeling of 'heightened awareness' by the drug. Rather than just cure depression, Prozac is also effective in shaping individual to conform to social expectations.
