What Was The Name Of The Rescue Mission Authorized By President Jimmy Carter?

Answer Question

The name of the Rescue Mission that took place on the 24th of April 1980 was called Operation Eagle Claw or also Operation Evening Light. In the planning stages it was known as Operation Rice Bowl.

After Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran and took 53 hostages a rescue operation was approved by the United States. The Americans probably felt that the demands of the hostage takers were unreasonable. The prolonged holding of the hostages by the Iranians was also affecting the credibility of President Jimmy Carter. Earlier President Jimmy Carter had not approved of intervention in the internal situation in Iran and did not support the Shah with troops during the revolution. This was in part because of the poor human rights record of the Shah's regime. The rescue mission on the hand was seen as a necessary decision.
