1997 GMC Jimmy Won't Start, Ignition Switch? Park Neutral Switch? Can You Help?

Already Tried: Hello - I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy that has been having some problems starting lately. I turn the key to the position before the starting position and typically that would be when I hear my fuel pump and my dash lights go on, but I get nothing

I replaced the ignition switch last night and everything appears to be back to normal.  To anyone replacing this in the future be sure to find an E4 external hex socket, I had a hard time finding one.

I'm having the same problem, was it the actual keyed ignition switch or the one the other post mentioned below the key?

    Thanks

I think the problem is with your jimmy's battery. Battery
voltage should be around 14.5+Volts while engine is running so check the alternator output, by checking the battery terminals with the engine running with a volt meter to see if you have at least 13.5+volts. If the battery is ok then your ignition switch is the problem may be the ignition coil is week but I think battery is week.

Thanks Juliaa. The battery was my first suspect as well. I tried starting it while I was jumping it and it had the same issue, I even removed the battery and tried jumping directly from the jumper cables to my battery cables, same result. I also forgot to mention that the engine turns over when I try to crank it, but without getting fuel it just cranks and cranks. I bought an ignition switch last night so I'm going to install that tonight and see if that helps.

The problem is the ignition switch which is located directly under the key, which is beneath the steering column shroud. This switch controls dash lights, fuel pump, shifter release. You have to take your dash apart to replace it but it is a relatively easy fix and the part is about 150.00 dollars. Make sure you have Torx sockets # 5 for the switch removal, only GM would do this to mess with you. Good Luck

Was this the problem and did you get it resolved.  Mine won't start, no fuel pump noise, no dash lights, and won't come out of park.

Yes it was the harness that goes from where you put the key in dowb to under the floor.
