The Silk Route was an ancient trade route that linked the east with the west. It served as a link between the civilizations that existed in the orient primarily in China with those that existed in the Occident.

The Silk Route was the hub of trade activities especially during the time of the Roman Empire. The route was about 5000 miles long and started from China and passed through Central Asia. It then traversed Afghanistan and Iran (then Persia) and continued till the Levant or Middle East. From there the Silk Route took a marine route crossing the Mediterranean Sea; the end points of the journey were the Roman ports of Florence, Venice and Genoa.

The principal commodities that were exchanged were silk from China and precious metals like gold and silver from the west. The Silk Route was an important link not only in the matters of trade but also in the exchange of ideas from different cultures.
