A bursa is a fluid-filled sac in the joints; think of it like a shock absorber. Bursitis occurs when the sac becomes inflamed either because of erosion (wear and tear in the joint associated with arthritis), injury (repeated knocks to the knee or kneeling on hard floors), irritation (overuse of the joint) or infection.

The main risk factor for bursitis is age, and the main joint that tends to be affected is the knee. In such cases, the condition is sometimes called "house maid's knee" as it is a risk for anyone who kneels a lot (carpet-layers also have to be careful). Gout is also a risk factor because of the crysal deposits in joints. That said, elbows are the next most common joint to be affected, typically from overuse (think tennis players).

Bursitis causes stiff painful joints, hard to move.
If infection is the cause, then fever and redness in the joint will also usually be noticeable. Antibiotics may be required.

Treatment for non-infection cases is usually quite successful and basically involves rest, future preventative measures, and possibly icepacks or a short course of anti-inflammatory drugs.
