If the question is "why is the gas price going up". The answer is simple. You keep buying it. You hear on the news when they hold those mock hearings for oil executives it is supply and demand. Bull!!! The change in supply and demand hasn't changed much the last 5 years. We have more oil in this country alone to supply our energy needs for hundreds of years. When this all began the price of gas went from 1.85/gal. To 2.85/gal. Overnight. They held phony hearings to show the people that the government was trying to hang someone so the oil co. Dropped the price a little to satisfy the people. We still paid it and they said" look at these idiots, we've double our asking price and they're still paying." this recent hike is just phase two and guess what. We're still paying it. You see on the news people saying" what can we do? We have to pay it". NO you don't. Stop buying gas, let the country stop in its tracks, don't go to work. People want to complain all day long but don't want to take the steps to make it stop. Last i checked, the government is not its own entity but the government is you and me and every American born citizen. We don't need to buy oil from outside the country.  we need to be self sufficient. Until the people of this country make a stand you'll keep buying and they'll keep price gouging. If something is being allowed it's only because someone's palms are being greased.

Way to go septic! I'm in, and I'll go another step and file exempt on my w-4 the "tax man" doesn't know how to spend that money so take it away from them too. Also we all need to stop buying things that are not made in America. We might suffer a little "quality of life" by doing this but the change for the better that will result will make that little sufferage well worth it! This is my favorite part..."They (the oil companies) said..." look at these idiots, we've double our asking price and they're still paying." This is the best description of the lazy, greedy, spoiled brat "American consumer" that I have seen in a long time. The government is blamed for a lot of things and most of them are justifiable but all that is being done to fix it is a lot of complaining. It is time to use the purchasing power of the American people. Math lesson... 300 million people not spending any money for 3 days = over a billion dollars in lost tax revenue. GET OFF YOU LAZY BUTS AMERICA AND FIX IT!

Having worked in the exploration end of the oil industry for more than ten years I'm curious as to where this oil is which will supply our needs for hundreds of years. ANWAR by the best estimate could supply our needs for eleven to twelve months. The vast oil shales in the Rocky Mountains contain not oil but kerogen, a waxy oil-like substance for which there is no finacially feasable method for getting out of the ground or any method available for refining it into a usable substance for our use. I still believe there's no magic bullet for this energy crisis, alot of fingers have been pointed every which direction and alot of blue sky solutions thrown out. We may see somewhat of a lessening in price but I feel we're stuck with $3+ a gallon. I guess if everyone did just stay home, totally quit using any powered device, quit eating, we'd certainly show those greedy suckers. Is nice in theory but it isn't going to happen.

The oil companies are certainly much to blame for the price increases we've seen over the last year. That being said why doesn't anyone trot out the fact that our federal government makes $3 for every dollar that the oil companies make. To me it makes our grandstanding lawmakers into pretty hypocritical people.

I would like to know were you found that figure of $3 for every $1, I'm not saying it isn't true I just want to know were you got that information.

At the current rate of profit per gallon of gas ranging from six cents to nine cents per gallon and the federal gas tax being 19 cents per gallon is where I got it. Also recently when one company was crucified for making 40 billion in one quarter the fed made 119 billion in the same quarter off that company. Supposedly last year Chevron lost money on their gas sales, where they made their money was on the sale of crude.
