Mr. Bulldog makes sense when he says that no one knows for sure who built the pyramids and why. One school of thought shocks us with its assumption that the great Pyramid at Giza had been built by the aliens from some unknown planet. Weird. Isn't it?

The construction of the pyramids drew on the general Egyptian population. Each summer from July to October, when the fields were flooded by the Nile River, that is how the farmers earned their living. In return for their work, they obtained free accommodations and food, and probably also a small wage. In addition, building the tomb of the pharaoh counted as service to the gods. Experts estimate that there were a few tens of thousands of such unskilled workers on a pyramid's building site during the building season. There were also a couple thousand craftsmen as well.
So, the pyramids were not really constructed by slaves. They were constructed by unskilled farm workers and skilled craftsmen. However, there may have been some slave labor involved, but the majority were farmers or craftsmen.
This is what is believed to be true. No one knows for sure who built the pyramids or how they built them.
