I have been made redundant and want to know if I am allowed to apply for a different vacancy within the company. The company are happy for me to apply. But I want to know if it is legal

Yes it is purely legal. You can apply for any vacancy any number of times you want in any company. You are not cheating here or making false statements. It is good to apply within the same company you have worked for as they know lot of things about your temperament, knowledge and skills. Good Luck.
