Like say in a pool. If there was food at the bottom, or a toy. I am just curious if animals, like cats and dogs, can adapt to being underwater for a few like humans can. I don't like being underwater, but I can for a bit.

I cannot say regarding total immersion. But the Van cats of Turkey are noted for their willingness to swim. For some reason they are not averse to getting wet, unlike most cats.

I used to own a cat that would jump in the bathtub while i was taking a bath.Cats do know how to swim but that don't say its cool to toss them in a pool.
