It was in the year 1513 (17 years before Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca empire) that a Spanish conquistador named Ponce de Leon started the exploration of the Americas after the discovery of the 'New World' (christened by Amerigo Vespucci) by Christopher Columbus in the year 1492. Sensing great potential wealth in the region, the major motive behind the exploration of almost all the Spanish conquistadors was the desire to find gold and other valuable sources of treasure.

There was a myth amongst the Spanish about the Fountain of Youth, which was believed to contain the 'water of eternity'. In other words, it was believed that if someone drank from the 'Fountain of Youth', then they would never grow old and would always stay young. This was another factor that motivated Ponce de Leon to explore the Americas. Nevertheless Ponce de Leon succeeded in neither of his quests of finding the Fountain of Youth or reserves of gold. However he managed to conquer Florida and made it another Spanish colony.
