Wedged between the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it's indisputable that San Francisco's location is anything but dramatic.
Built on a dozen or so hills, San Francisco's geographic edginess is further enhanced by the ever-present threat of earthquakes, the most famous being in 1906. That seismic event coupled with the resulting fires has left barely a handful of buildings dating from that era.
But the pluckiness of San Franciscans has guaranteed that, despite the apparent drawbacks of the location, the city has thrived. Today it's a modern cutting-edge city that engagingly mixes high finance, the internet and progressively liberal politics.
The 21st century San Francisco - with its iconic Golden Gate Bridge – is far removed from its origins. First recorded as Yerba Buena (Good Herb), what is now San Francisco was a Spanish fishing village (pop. 400) nestling beside a large natural harbour.
Life proceeded largely unchanged until 1847 when the territory became a US possession and was renamed after the area's Franciscan mission. Two years later, the discovery of gold was to transform the hamlet unrecognisably.

San Francisco has a very colorful past. It was known as the Barbary Coast during the gold rush of 1849. The streets were so muddy, the mud sunk horses up to their bridles. The people took the abandoned freight off the ships and filled the streets with it as a filler. The ships are still at the bottom of the San Francisco bay from the rats chewing them up till they sank. This is where we got our harbor rats in San Francisco. Many were uncovered during the B.A.R.T. Construction, which is their electric train system. Before the San Francisco/Oakland Bay bridge was built, we used fairies to transport us and our cars across the bay. There is so much I could write, Golden Gate Park was owned by one man who was very rich. His name escapes me, but it was all sand dunes at one time. He had soil transported in from the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and plants sent in from all over the earth.
When he died, he donated the park to the city of San Francisco.
There is so much more. I hope you enjoyed this bit of history. I can tell you a little of Fisherman's wharf, the islands around San Francisco, and about the wale that swam up the bay into the Sacramento River and got stuck and so on. Oh yeah, the water supply for S.F. Comes from the mountains and is the best in the world. In my opinion and I have had a lot of water from all over.

It is perhaphs the most beautiful city in the world. The people are super cool. You can expect to be cold on any day of the year. The city is fabulous by way of the arts, theater, restaurants, malls and in people being politically correct. But they still sell fur at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth ! There is a lot of wealth and a lot of poverty. The city has a crazy night life and people party all night and every day of the week. People work out and eat consciously. The politics in the City kiss you. It is very viscous and internecine. But hop into a car and drive out of the city and the view is breathtaking ! This is heaven !
