Jimmy Carter's mother was Lillian Gordy Carter or Bessie Carter. She was born on the 15th of August 1898 and died on the 30th of October 1983 of Pancreatic Cancer. Bessie Lillian Gordy was born in the city of Richmond in Georgia. Her parents were Mary Ida Nicholson and James Jackson Gordy.
She contributed immensely to nursing and was also a member of the Peace Corps as part of which she visited India. Carter Road an affluent sea side neighbourhood in the Bandra suburb of Bombay is believed to be named after her. Initially she wanted to be a part of the nurse wing of the Army but the closure of the program led her to abandon these plans. She later studied at the Grady Memorial Hospital in their School of Nursing and obtained her nursing degree.
