In the examples you have given. There are ten dead and six missed, this is not grammatically correct, as missed is a past simple verb, and is not used as an adjective to describe something, or a situation, still in existence now.
The sentence, There are ten dead and six missing, is correct because the continuous form of the verb missing, (called the gerund) is often used as an adjective.
The verb I am missing him, (meaning I feel his absence), or my cat is missing, (meaning he can not be found) can be used as a continuous form of the verb in the first case, or an adjective, in the second case..
