Concerning indexing of CDs

I also have many CDs and recently put them in a binder. I indexed them by artist then title. Some are mixed artists so I created a section specifically for these CDs along with movie soundtracks and such.

Don't no know how complex you would like to get. There are several commercial products for cataloging collections but Microsoft Media Player does a pretty good job with CDs. It searches the internet for info about each CD. This includes downloading the album cover art. Best of all it is free.

Some of the Cd's are in original  cases and some are in paper sleeves. Should I shelve them, case them or carry them in a portfolio case. Now it's hard finding what I'm looking for and where it is located.

It really depends on how you use your CDs. If you know all of them by heart, but just have trouble locating a particular one at the time you want it, then you might shelf them (so they are all visible). If you travel a lot in your car, you might stick them in cases (with or without their jewel cases, whichever you prefer). Regardless of how you store them, however, I would start a spreadsheet and catalog them with all the info YOU care about - musician, CD title, type of music (rock, new age, etc.). Then, I would give each CD your own personal number - something like R-1001 (R standing for "rock"). Get a system set up - N for new age, H for hard rock, J for jazz, C for country, etc. Include this number on your spreadsheet. Now you will never buy a CD you already have ... either because you forgot you had it or can't find it! Good luck!
