Yes, it can be done, but you must pick up a primer especially made for laminate.
Zinsser makes a good one, but make sure get the one for laminate. Read the directions, because you have to let it cure for a certain amount of time before applying the paint.
I recommend that you use an acrylic paint such as Glidden all siding and accents in Satin or Gloss base.
It is scrubbable and won't peel like a latex paint will. Latex paint is great for wall, but not so for cabinets.
You can also check with the paint supplier for other types of paint to use on your cabintry before making a decision.
