Texas is called the 'lone star state' as this state from the period of its independence in the year 1836 till its annexation to the United States in 1845, Texas was an independent country for almost about a period of ten years.
Texas, whose area is equal to the areas of France, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands put together, earlier belonged to Spain. This vast yet relatively empty region was not paid any attention to by the Spanish government. It had a population of only about 7000 people and only three settlements that could be classified as towns. When Mexico gained independence from Spain, it empowered American people to settle in Texas. Gradually the population of Texas increased and outnumbered the Mexicans. Mexico tried to overpower them but failed nonetheless. In the year 1836, Texas gained independence but was unable to cope up with the demands of self-government. Later on after almost ten years, the state was relieved and delighted to be annexed in 1845 by the United States of America, who was not willing at that time to add Texas to its map.
