I prefer a Mac. The Mac operating system is much less likely to get a virus or spyware. Many programs that you use in Windows are also available on the Mac, and if they are not, you can use Boot Camp in Leopard (OS 10.5) or the upcoming release of Snow Leopard (10.6) to install Windows XP SP2 or newer and choose which operating system you want to boot to.

If you live near an Apple Retail Store ( www.apple.com to find the nearest one to you) you can always go in and speak to one of the sales representatives, try out the operating system and attend workshops on the available Apple software.

Also, when you call for technical support, you normally get routed to someone in your country. Apple has call centers based in California, Texas, Florida and Indiana. If the call volumes are high in the US, the calls generally overflow to Canada, then to the Philippines.

Dell computers have been popular over the past few years, however if you have to call tech support, get ready to talk to someone in India. You don't really hear much about Gateway any more, however their tech support is based solely in the US.

Well, It really depends on what you are going to be using it for, Obviously for college. If it is performance you are looking for and simple normal computer design Dell is for you, particularly the XPS range, this range is Dells high performance laptops these are probably the best option. This is  because although they are initially quite expensive they have the latest hardware and this means that it will play/run all the latest software. One thing that Dell has over the competition is that you the consumer are able to customize your computer to your needs i.e. Better graphics card or more RAM.

Mac on the other although not as powerful certainly is one of a kind, it's innovative programs and word processors make Macs so popular, Macs are more so for students, home PC's and for the average user. In the Macs probably either a Macbook or Macbook pro would be advised, this is because they are practical, fairly powerful and have a host of features that Dell does not offer in any of their computers.
