Actually, Biblically no mention of apples is ever made.  As for their specific crime, it was disobedience to God's command.

Some believe a fruit was literally picked from a tree.  Others, including myself, believe it is allegorical, and that the actual act was something else... Such as sex.  Through the act of sex, young people who were otherwise innocent became aware of their nakedness, and learned the power of creation of life which made the promise that it would make them as God partially true.  However, the serpents lies are often that way, only partial truths.

BTW, though many interpret a serpent to mean a snake, the Bible does not specifically say that.  Only after the temptation is the serpent cursed to crawl upon it's belly in the dust.  The original hebrew word which was translated into serpent is defined as "Anything which is venomous to the body or the soul", which means the serpent could have been in any form, including that of a man.

I don't think it was so much them eating the fruit from the tree as it was them defying God.  He gave them a paradise and told them to do whatever just don't eat from one tree.  They broke his law and disobeyed him.
