What Protection Is The Endangered Caribou Getting?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The mountain caribou is now a severely endangered species in the USA. The last remaining mountain caribou in the lower 48 states of the USA,  herd of about 37 animals,  received an extra measure of protection from the Eastern District Court in Washington in February 2007 after a ruling on February 14 that will allow the endangered caribou to migrate from the northern areas to the southern areas of their habitat.

The migration of the caribou will be protected but people will still be able to use snowmobiles in the area but in a more controlled way. It is known that the caribou become stressed by snowmobiles and other recreational snow vehicles passing through their habitat at high speeds. This adds to the stress already caused by the cold weather and deep snow and makes the mammal very vulnerable.

Hopefully this move will take some of the pressure off them as it would be a disaster for a species to become extinct to allow people with more money than sense to take over a beautiful natural environment just for the pleasure of snowmobiling.
