How Was Embedded Journalism Started?

How was embedded journalism started? Who was the first embedded journalist?

I'm not sure who the first embedded reporter was but I believe that the term came into being during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Civilian reporters must sign a contract with the military authority before being allowed to be embedded into an operational military unit. They have to follow the rules that are set forth in the contract.
When they are embedded, they eat, sleep, and travel with the unit under the protection of that unit.

You could consider Ernest (Ernie) Pyle an embedded journalist as he wrote war articles for the Scripps Howard newspaper chain from 1935 to 1944 while traveling with the American Forces during WW2. He was killed in combat action while writing an article in 1944. He was known as a War Correspondent and cartoonist. I'm sure that someone can come up with an earlier war reporter, but I will stick by my earlier answer to your question. The term came into being during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
