No one can really tell because we can't be in every single part of the ocean at the same time. Also the number will keep changing because they reproduce and get killed. But I have seen serious estimates ranging from as few as 800 to as much as 2,600. Quite honestly there could be a little less or quite a bit more; with their complex social structure, differing individual migration routes, mysterious and surprisingly shy/cautious behavior it is so difficult to get any real sense of the exact number.
