In the market and all the pharmacy stores are available an assortment of lotions and balms that aid in ridding the dog with fleas and ticks. According tot the directions, you should apply those lotions and balms. I usually just give the dog a bath with some anti flea shampoo. If he has ticks on him than I usually Light a match, blow it out, and then put it on the tick. Nail polish remover works too.

Using Borax soap additive in the pet areas, carpets, bedding etc helps kill live fleas and rids the house of them
It is very safe for animals to sleep on also.
I have used borax on my carpets and pet bedding for 3 years now and never have had a flea problem since. Keeps the fleas off dogs also.

I wouldn't recommend the match thing & never heard of the nail polish remover thing either for ticks. Just definitely don't do both together, lol. Use tweezers when removing ticks from your dog, then crack them in half or burn them then, after their removed, whichever, just don't fling them somewhere alive or they can re-attach to you or your children,if you have any or back on your pet. Make sure when removing that you get the head out from under your pets skin as they burry their head beneath to feed like a vampire. Ticks carry Lyme disease & other infectious organisms & can cause your dog skin irriations or skin infections. Ticks like the face, eyes, ears, inside the ears to. If your in an area with ticks, check them down from head to toe, especially during summer months. I dog sit for my cousin & this season have removed 78 ticks so far. Poor baby. I used a shampoo I bought from my vet (cost me about $15.00) called Ovitrol Plus (it has aloe, lanolin, oatmeal & coconut oil in it as well) for fleas & ticks, & kills fleas & ticks & works for killing flea eggs up to 4 weeks. So, if you buy any of those drops for the dogs tail & between the shoulders ask your vet or manufacturer if you can combine the two. Some insecticides definitely should not be combined. You don't want to napalm your pet & make'em sick. Good luck & I hope I helped you & your baby.
