Did Sue Townsend Base Adrian Mole On Her Own Family?

Answer Question

Sue Townsend, full name - Susan Lillian "Sue" Townsend, better known as, the author of the Adrian Mole books, insisted that some of the characters that appear in the books were people from her children's life, teachers to be specific in their school- Mary Linwood Comprehensive School located in Leicester.

Some of the characters such as Mrs. Claricotes and, the locations such as Saffron Lane Estate in the book, are also taken from Sue Townsend's personal life. She was born on the 2nd of April in the year 1946. Her Adrian mole collection consists of a series of 6 volumes, which dealt with the life of Adrian Mole, who was age 13 and 9 months in the first book.

Sue Townsend essentially covered two main themes in the books, one that spoke on Adrian's personal life in terms of his ambitions, dreams and his failure in achieving them and the second, being the political and social state of affairs in Britain at the time.

She proceeded and gave a rather simple working class take on both the above, due to which, many believe that the book could have been about her own family. Although the statement is not completely true, it isn't completely false either.
