How Much Money Can I Earn If I Work At A Summer Camp In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Working at a summer camp can be a very rewarding experience, even though you should not expect to make a large amount of money. This is especially the case in the UK where counsellors and most other staff do appear to earn less than their counterparts in most American summer camps.

Most counsellors working for UK day camps for children earn national minimum wage, which currently stands at  £5.35 per hour for those who are over 22 years of age. For those in the 18 to 21 age group, the minimum wage is £4.45.

In the case of residential camps, you may not actually be paid per hour, but will instead receive a specific lump sum at the end of each week. It is fairly standard to pay counsellors, or "group leaders" between £200 and £250 per week. Senior staff members or EFL teachers may earn slightly more than this. It is important to remember, however, that some camps will deduct a small amount from the staff salaries in order to cover part of the cost of food and lodging at a residential summer camp, or to pay for staff uniforms.
