Truth or Consequences is a town of 8,000 on the banks of the Rio Grande River in the southwest corner of the U.S. state of New Mexico.
The resort town banks on its many geothermal hot springs, rivers and lakes, and desert mountain views. It is particularly attractive to retirees.
The town got its strange name in 1950, when its resort business was languishing. A popular game show of the time was "Truth or Consequences," on which contestants had to answer question then accept the consequences if they were wrong.
On the 10th anniversary of the show's run, NBC TV producer Ralph Edwards put out a request that a U.S. city change its name to that of the show. The resort town -- originally named Hot Springs -- voted 4-1 to change its name. Edwards then came there and did a live broadcast, and Truth or Consequences was back on the tourist map.
