The phallus is a reference to the male organ of generation. Thus it is a name for the male penis, or sex organ. It specifically denotes an erect penis or a mimetic image of an erect penis. Objects or things that resemble or symbolise the penis are also known as phallus. Things related to it are known as phallic. It has several sexual connotations and also has several fertility and cultural implications.
Phallus has found mention in various forms of art and literature in various countries and several ancient cultures and religion. Phallic worship or adoration for the phallus means a celebration of fertility and the act of reproduction. It is done in many ancient religions like certain sects in Hinduism and ancient Greek religions. Swords, knife, the Shiv-lingam, Hermes-Greek deity etc are some common examples of phallic objects. Even the tie or the neck tie is considered as a phallic symbol in the modern times.
