Having lived in the country the answer is definitely NO unless that is the only time you can go.
Never pass up the chance to go to Brasil.
January is the second most expensive month for flight tickets and hotels to Brasil because it is mid Summer in the country. All of the Brasilians are on vacation and traveling. Vacation time off work in Brasil is a minimum of one month; not two weeks like the USA. So things are busy. It is also hot then, after all it is summer.
Oh and responding to the person who said to visit Mardi Gras or Carnival as they call it; stay the hell away, you will hate it. You will never get a ticket first off with out buying a super high priced vacation packet in the USA and then it will be in the side streets somewhere and not in the main arena where all the best seats and performances are held. 170 million Brasilians are trying to get ticket too and you will not be the first in line but the very last. This is the last days of their vacation status and they milk it for all they can.
Watch it on TV, it's better than live. Been there done that.
Best time to visit is in spring months of mid September to early November with October good but some rain will be around. Weather is pleasant with mid temperatures.
Good luck and be sure to have a guarana when you go.
