Yellowstone became the world's first National Park in 1872. It lies within the Rocky Mountains and due to its size, it is not contained within one state. It is actually located within the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. It covers an area of 2,219,791 acres (around 899,015 hectares).
Yellowstone has a long history of being recognised as a place of outstanding natural beauty. It has had a long association with Native Americans who used to live in Yellowstone.
Some of the rarities to be found in Yellowstone include petrified forests, lava formations, as well as a wide range of both plants and wildlife. Around 200 different types of birds inhabit various parts of Yellowstone. In addition there are a number of different types of fish contained within the river.
There are also sites of geological interest and there are around 10,000 hot springs in the park, as well as 200 geysers.
