God made the cat so man could pet the tiger. The proverb implies that the cat is a type of wild beast—and it is in some ways so. A feral animal is one which escapes from domestication and returns to its roots, its wild state. In cats this happens when cats are not socialized properly in their young years. An analogy of animals going feral can be seen in H.G. Wells book the Island of Dr. Moreau.
One reason why cats go feral is that many unwanted cats and kittens are left or abandoned by their owners and this leads them to strive to survive. Once cats go feral, their population increases dramatically. In urban settings there are certain benefits in the sense that they contain rodent populations but in delicate ecosystems they wreak havoc and have even led to the extinction of various species, including some birds. There are also many other disadvantages including their becoming carriers of disease.
