Fish is very high in omega 3 fatty acids and has received many accolades for its potential to reduce the risk for heart diseases by about 30 to 40 percent. Fresh water fishes like salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel are extremely good for health as they contain high level of omega 3 fatty acids. Not less than two servings of fish per week is necessary. Shellfish, soya oil, linseeds, walnuts leafy vegetables, rapeseed oil, sunflower seeds are rich in fatty acids. Oily fishes like hilsa, katla, black cod, sardines, tuna ,swordfish ,mackerel, sprats are high in fatty acids but should not be eaten regularly as the mercury content in them is a bit high. Pregnant women should avoid consuming these fishes. A recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that lactating women should consume flax seed oil everyday.
