Some amount of wax is normal, but excessive dark wax can be a sign of ear mites or early ear infection.  Other signs include ear irritation which may present as head shaking, scratching at the ears or rubbing the ears on the ground, redness, discharge and foul smelling ears.  Your vet can examine your dogs ears with an otoscope and do some ear swabs.  This will detect the presence of mites or a bacterial or fungal infection.  If it is mites, your vet can provide you with some medication, there are several options available.  Mites survive on your dog's coat so it is necessary to treat the entire animal, not just the ears.  In addition, ear mites are very contagious and it is necessary to treat all animals in the household.
