When Did The Barbarians Take Over In Rome?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The barbarians under Alaric ransacked Rome on the 24th of August 410. This is regarded as the time the barbarians gained control of Rome. Alaric was a Visigoth ruler and became the first Germanic leader to storm the once impenetrable city. The barbarians attacked Rome for several reasons. Firstly the Roman Empire was on the decline and was an easy target. Secondly the barbarians were looking for land in the south. Thirdly the barbarians moved into Rome because their lands were being invaded by other groups like the Huns.

The Romans considered any non Roman to be a Barbarian. The barbarians also ransacked Rome under Geiseric and Ricimer in 455 and 472 respectively. The barbarian invasions led to the fall of Rome. They stunned the entire Roman Empire. It was felt that the entire Roman order had come to an end.
