Who Are Terry And Julie, In The Kinks Song?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

"Terry and Julie" are referred to in the song by The Kinks called "Waterloo Sunset".

The single was released by the band in 1967 and featured on their album "Something Else".  It reached number 2 in the UK charts in 1967 and its writer and producer, Kinks songwriter Ray Davies, considered it a professional milestone.

The lyrics are written from the point of view of a solitary man thinking about the romantic encounters of a couple at Waterloo Underground station.  The characters "Terry and Julie" mentioned in the song were thought to refer to film stars Terrance Stamp and Julie Christie although Davies contradicts this theory in his autobiography saying instead that the inspiration came after a boyhood incident that left him hospitalised.  Talking on a radio show, he said that he couldn't name who they are as they were "good friends".

A poll on London FM in 2004, named this song the "Greatest Song About London" and Time Out magazine named it the best "Anthem of London."
